Camping: Serengeti Style

I can officially say that I survived the Serengeti! It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.. of course I've said that about everything that has happened on this trip. The biggest attraction in the Serengeti is the large amount of carnivores that can be seen, especially the big cats. I saw 3 leopards, and 5 cheetahs total, and a whole bunch of lions. I actually saw 17 in one day! Our assignments on this trip were to analyze the behaviors of giraffes and elephants. We had to do a 2…See More

Africa's full of surprises!

It occurred to me while I was laying in bed last night that I haven't really talked about how different it is here than what I expected. So here goes nothing: Contrary to popular belief, we are able to get hot water for showers. Sometimes the water pressure cuts out, or the water is actually scalding hot, but I guess I shouldn't be complaining :) The land is not too dry and open as you'd see on Animal Planet or the Discovery Channel. It's actually full of hills/mountains and it's green for the…See More

So. Surreal.

I have had the best past couple of days ever.First we paired up and were sent away to do "homestays" with different families in the area. I was brought to the home of Mama Happy. She put us to work right away- we did laundry (by hand), dishes, cleaned walls, swept (using a tree branch), and cooked. She was the sweetest woman and I'm so glad I was able to meet her. Being with her for a whole day and living how she does put so many things in perspective for me. People always say "don't take life…See More

AHH! Tanzania!!

So sorry that I haven't been able to write! The internet here is sort of bad, I mean I am in Africa. But, yes, I have arrived safely, even though my luggage arrived 2 days after I did. That was an adventure.. luckily I packed my carry-on well so I had enough stuff to last me for those two days. So far I have seen every animal that appears in the Lion King and I have learned a lot about human-wildlife conflicts. Conserving the wildlife is a huge thing for Tanzania because the tourists that come…See More

A few more hours!

So I'm sitting here in the Nairobi Airport in Kenya, just waiting for my flight to leave to get to Kilimanjaro Airport, then I have a car ride to our camp. This is the first time I've had internet access, but I'm not able to upload my pictures just yet. We went to London yesterday and saw the Buckingham Palace and St. James Garden. Both were absolutely beautiful!!! The flights have been soo long and exhausting, all I really want to do is sleep. I'm still in the process of learning everyone's…See More

Almost there!!

I have 4 days until I'll be in the airport waiting for my flight to leave! We have a 12 hour layover in London before we take the next flight to Kenya, then the next to Tanzania, Africa. The butterflies in my stomach increase with every day that I get closer to leaving. It really doesn't feel like it's real! In January I filled out this very long application, got a call within 2 weeks to set up a phone interview, and I was accepted on the spot! It was one of the most exciting moment of my life.…See More

It's almost Summer!

Hello everyone! So, today has been pretty hectic. I had both my calc and chem finals and now I have to study for spanish. But, hey, I'm almost done my sophomore year! It's really sad to see everyone leaving to go home for the summer. Most of the girls in my suite left and it's so quiet. I thought I would appreciate the silence, but now that the noise is gone I  just want it back! Heard some good news last week though! Last Monday I found out that I won Vice President for my class for next year!…See More

Is it May 17th yet?

Wow!I've been soooo busy these past two weeks! Last week was the last week of softball and it's probably a good thing because I have so many last minute things to do this week! Starting on Sunday my list of things to do included 2 papers, 4 1-page journals, Study for a Chem exam and a Spanish oral exam, 2 days of calc homework, RA training, meetings, oh and I have to make 3 scrapbook pages for our softball seniors!Next week will feel like a breeze though, and I can't wait! We have classes on…See More

Who is Margaret Wigiser??

So right now I am enjoying some downtime while I'm in Fort Myers, FL with the softball team and I wanted let everyone know that we have been involved in some pretty close games, but we have only won one so far. I'm hoping for another win in our double header tomorrow! But anyway.. something really cool happened on Tuesday. If you haven't seen the movie A League of Their Own, you definitely have to put that on your to-do list! For those of you who haven't seen it, it is basically a true story…See More
