Alexandria was so much fun. It was only a 3 hour bus ride from Cairo. I went with the AUC ISA (International Student Affairs). Alex is completely different from Cairo. It is more conservative than Cairo, the way people dress especially women, there are definitely more women covering their heads and some veiled than in Cairo. Also there is less horn beeping on the road and less traffic. One thing that surprised me, was that during day time, early in the morning, there are a lot of people on cafes smoking sheesha (hukkah) and most of them are men. I asked one of the IPL (International Peer Leader) about why they smoke sheesha all day even in the morning, and the response was that, they do not have jobs so they just go to cafes all day to smoke, but he had no idea where they get the money to pay for what they buy at the cafe.
Our hotel was close to everything in downtown Alexandria. I had a nice view of the Mediterranean Sea from my hotel room window. The water is so beautiful and blue it reminded me of my homeland Lamu,Kenya. The first night there we went to a very nice cafe/restaurant and we had good food and it was not all Egyptian, but also American food. Afterwards we smoked sheesha and that was fun.
Visited few places, first was the King Farouq Moutaz(palace), the place was so beautiful and it had a nice garden near the sea that people go for picnic with their families and to see the sunset. The other places that I visited were, the Roman Theater, the Bibliotheca Alexandrian (library), and the Citadel of Qaitbay, all these places were amazing, I am glad I decided to go to Alex this past weekend to see the other side of Egypt.
